Nowadays in the biggest city of Northern Thailand, there is an old society that still stays here in Chiang Mai. Wat-Kate Community is an old – traditional on the east of Ping River side. This community started from many nationalities; Chinese, Europeans and local people. You can see from the remainder architecture. Wat Kate Temple is the center of the society. The building was started since 1796, at that time Chiang Mai was a colony of Bangkok. Before the railway arrived to Chiang Mai, this community was an important boat-landing from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or other Southern provinces. There were many foreigners such as English, Chinese, Sikh came to trade and lived here until now. The goods that they traded were necessary things such as salt, herbs, clothes, and sugar.
Wat Kate Museum is a place to collect many historical evident. This museum is in Wat Kate Temple. It is open everyday on 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are many old things such as Chofa, Bairaka (decorations of the two ends of a Buddhist temple’s roof with Naga headed-shaped horn), old style Chinese dishes, and traditional household utensils.
Wat Kate temple has been an ancient remain of Department of Fine Arts from 1975. It is on Ping Riverside Road that came through ChareonKrung Road on Kawila Zone.
Also, the Wat Kate community was a site of Borneo Company Limited. This company had received a forestry concession (teak) from King of Chiang Mai for 100 years, since 1855 to 1955. This company used more than 200 elephants to haul teak logs along Ping River and Ping tributaries to Paknampo; the estuary at Nakornsawan province then, sent those logs to Ayutthaya to change into teak boards and exported.
In the Borneo company, there are three big and beautiful teak houses which each of house has more than 100 teak poles, in the biggest teak house has 137 poles. These houses are not only old houses but also have many traditional works of art that I recommend you to visit them one day.
The charm of Wat Kate community is protecting and guarding the traditional thing to generation and generations. The houses and shops still keep the old day of Chiang Mai City that no one can delete it.

thank you ka p'ann
I like Wat Kate and Wat Kate community because there are a lot of antiques including old style decorations there, along the road and community. But, I have never gone to the place that you posted on our blog, I think I will try to visit there next time. Also, I just have read a magazine which is written about Wat Kate community, it is said that goverment and related sectors in Chiang Mai want to develop the community and surrounding areas to be commercial community, because it is a prime spot for tourism in Chiang Mai as well. I thik it will be really terrible if this project is accomplished. The old beautiful community and chraming lifestyle of people will be destroyed. Thus, I think as we all live in Chiang Mai, we should be a part to protect this community as possible as we can.
Medkaw...jaaw ^_^
I had never heard and been in Wat Kate Museum. I seemed to have no right say anything about it. So I just asked my Thai friend to bring me there and looked around there. It is a really nice place. The style is totally different from CMU Museum. I could not believe this is a museum. I just think it is a old temple if I did not read the blog article posted by my classmate. This also is a good chance to see Thai different styles of museums. I still remember the CMU Museum where AJ. Ethelbert brought us to. That museum is much more modern than Wat Kate Museum. It makes me think about Chiang Mai again. “Amazing Thailand, Amazing Chiang Mai” Chiang Mai always represents us the mix styles between traditional and modern. The same as the museums in Chiang Mai, what they are amazing with the different styles! I like Thai land, I like Chiang Mai.

In my opinion, Wat kete community is an exemplary community which tries to preserve its valuable culture and arts. However, according to what I have heard, this community is going to be transformed into a commercial hub. This might sound as good news for those who prefer modern life style. Again, tourism has brought about good things to our society. Now, this community is going to be seen as being ‘amazing’ by our honored tourists. Obviously, those who love modern life style will be happy to hear this news, won’t they?
